STEM INITIATIVES – MAKERSPACE ACTIVITY
After the third grade read the historical fiction story, “Pop’s Bridge” students completed a brief study of bridges. They learned about the four most common bridges; the truss bridge, beam bridge, arch bridge, and suspension bridge. At the end of their study, each student made a bridge plan which incorporated design elements related to a particular type of bridge. Then, each student constructed his/her own bridge. Students had to problem solve through design struggles to make a completed bridge. This allowed them to use an engineering design model; ask – imagine – plan – create – improve.
